I is who I is...

April 12, 2011

This past weekend I got to take part in an online web session over at creativeLive. Nope...scratch that...this weekend I got to take part in a groundbreaking movement...yup I'm probably gonna get dramatic this blog post. Hang on...this is only the beginning...

For anyone who loves photography and does it as a business or just as a hobby and is toying with the idea of moving to the next level with it, I really encourage you to head over to creativeLive and see what they're about. We are talking about top photographers from all of the world spreading information, educating up and coming photographers to be successful and own who they are in the industry.

The session that I took part in was spearheaded by the amazingly talented Jasmine Star. For those of you not aware of who she is...please PLEASE go and check her out here. I hate to sound all stalkerish, but she has been able to articulate the way I think about photography, where I want to go with it and why I love it so much, in a way I haven't been able to. Her story is so inspirational and there were more than a few tears shed during her session...I know what you're thinking, wait! what??? tears during a photography workshop?? Yeah...it was that good.

I went into it thinking, ohmygoodness I am going to be coming out it with all of these great points and a plan to be successful and I will dominate afterwards (insert z-snaps). While, yeah this is what it was about and I did walk away with a wealth of information I came out with more...here are my top moments and lessons:
  1. I will be content with where I have come so far. I'm not a professional (yet) and I'm still shuddering when I say that word out loud. But the experiences I've had so far, have brought me to where I am now...without them, I would still be in Best Buy thinking about what camera would be right for me.
  2. I won't compare myself to other photographers. I live in an area where there is an incredible wealth of amazing photographers. I've fallen into the trap of thinking that they're so much better than I am. Yeah, they are...they've been doing it for so much longer! They have experiences I've only dreamt of. They've worked their behinds off to get there. But one thing they can't do better than me is being Amy Mercer. I is who I is, and no one can take that away...I own that! :)
  3. I won't stop learning. Yeah, I didn't go to Photography School. I didn't go to Business School. But I have the greatest school at my fingertips. It's called School of Life. Oh and the internet works wonders too.
  4. I'm going to make mistakes. It's ok. Yeah, I might not be saying that when they happen, but I'm going to learn from them so I don't make them again. There is a reason why pencils have erasers on the end...
I just can't say enough about this experience...thank you creativeLive for doing what you do!

This past month has been a fun one...one of my best friends came to say with us after having surgery and her kids kept both me and my sister hopping! We wouldn't have had it any other way. :) Here are just a few shots I got while they were here.

Here's hoping everyone's week is great!
